Clockwise from left

3. Alexander McQueen iphone sleeve and cuff

I want to dress in a way that is simple, yet classic, and elegant. I think there is really something to be said about, not only buying expensive clothing (this is really only the first step), but being able to wear them in a way that gives justice. I sigh out loud when I see expensive, beautiful garments worn in a way which, undermines their beauty. I cannot imagine how frustrating this is for the designer and I can only hope that they never see their clothes being worn in such a way.

I think there is also a way in which we can dress to look expensive, classy and elegant without spending extreme amounts of money. Dressing to suit our bodies is, in my opinion, the most important aspect. And not following trends for the sake of being "cool". You will always look and feel better if you instead concentrate on wearing things that suit you and reflect your personality.

So, having blabbed on a bit too much (feel free to gloss over my rambles), this is my dream outfit at the moment. I don't think I will ever tire of Balenciaga's derby boots, and Acne make the perfect denim jackets. Paired with a simple, clean cut Wang shirt dress and Comme des Garçon clutch (plus some sneaky phone and arm bling) I think this outfit is the image of sophistication and cool.

denim friends

For me, at the moment, its all about the denim. I'm drawing inspiration very much from the nineties-  think frayed denim, tiny round sunglasses (basically the entire wardrobe of Monica from Friends).

Ralph Lauren cap

Also a couple of things to note.
1. I have decided that topshop is seriously baben. I was on a hate-trip over it for a while, but alas I have been won over!
2. These dr marten sandals are literally the best thing I have seen for a while.
3. I am swooning a little over this fading denim jacket by Acne. Again I feel like my hatred of acid wash is seriously in need of a reconsider. Mind you my greatest love affairs/obsessions have grown out of hates- so hey, I'm keeping an open mind.
4. I am waiting impatiently for my urban outfitter round sunnies to arrive via post. Seriously the slowest shipping service everrrrrr. Even my hong kong bound iphone cases from ebay have arrived faster. grrrrrr
5. Backpacks are still baben
6. Comme des Garçon wallets are just so great. I am loving my ridiculously brightly coloured one.
7. I am turning 21 in less than a month! Time to start getting excited- yeeeeewwwwwww!

newbies

Just a little bit of post-Christmas shopping (made easier by my lovely new comme des garçons wallet). I am definitely not one for the ravenous boxing day sales, but a leisurely stroll and luncheon date with Mumma bear warrants such relaxed purchases.

Clockwise from left:

1. I am absolutely smitten with my Nike Roshes. After lusting over the black and white pair for weeks I suddenly flipped when I saw these red beauties. So vibrant!
2. The Gorman knit is a beautiful rendition of this Acne sweater which has been a hesitant must-buy of mine for the last couple of months. Only deterred by its rather scratchy feel. This one is definitely much more wearable though, and 100% super-soft Australian merino.
3. And here sitting pretty is my new wall-ét (pronounced with an appropriately snooty French accent– it did come from France after all!), a very well received Christmas present from aforementioned Mumma bear.

greeeeeeeeeen (and black and white)

when did I become so monochromatic? in a time when fluorescent and all things bright seem to be everywhere, I find myself flinching in rather sun-squinting agony at all things iridescent and bold. Summer seems to bring out this plethora of unwanted and unconsidered shades, blinding us into believing that wearing neon on neon is a good idea.

I think not. This summer I will be reclining in the comfort of black and white...hopefully joined by some of my friends like this ksubi dress and nike trainers...

A christmas wish list of the likes....

comme des garçons spring 2011

As I flicked through the first five or six looks from the comme des garcons spring collection, I must admit I didn’t really ‘get it’. I didn’t feel or understand the relevance of the black tape, bulky black draped fabrics or the structured white suits. It was only when I got to these two consecutive looks , that I finally understood…

Everything just clicked for me at this point, and the looks which followed seemed to tell the story and fill in the gaps in my mind. I feel that rei kawakubo is commenting on the way women/men/people in general feel restricted by clothes and what society accepts as‘normal’. I imagined the black taping is symbolic of the diminution of creativity, and when it was cut, the creativity and individualism kind of bursts out like a starving kitten which has just been rescued from a drain… (?)

Yet there was still a feeling of limitation and perhaps confusion within the garments. Everything seemed to be inside out, wrong way round, upside down and worn ‘wrongly’. But isn’t this what rei kawakubo is trying to say? Who are we to decide what is wrong or right or how things ‘should’ be worn. When did people become so judgemental and their ability to see beyond their own opinion, so limited?

One of the things which I love so much about this collection is the progression, and the way the clothes tell a story as they are presented. Each look flows so beautifully into the next, so much so that it is impossible for me to select a favourite individual look, simply because they do not really feel complete without the look which follows. Having said that, each look is so beautifully balanced and statuesque (I’m not sure why I’m using this word, but it feels so right here), and on its own says so much.

At the end of the collection, the rather confused exuberance and flamboyance of form and texture almost crawls back into itself. The black tape returns, followed by the final three looks, which for me really say the most. I feel Rei is saying her how this restrictiveness within society is causing individualism to dwindle. people are referred to as groups and broad generalisations about people are thrown around like scraps of paper.

I recently read “Farewell to Arms” by Hemmingway, and he comments that through war, the value of life is forgotten and soldiers are killed like swarms of bees. whole groups of men are referred to as ‘the French’ or ‘the Germans’ and all individualism is lost in a confusion of life, death and controversy.

Although Kawakubo isn’t talking about war, I think she is making a similar comment. Everyone is different, and has their own interpretation of fashion and clothing. What is right for some people is wrong for others. no two same people will view things with the same perspective or opinion. Society shouldn’t restrict people to what is considered ‘normal’ or ‘right’ because there isn’t really such a thing. instead imagination and individualism should be fostered and celebrated. GH

Sorry for blabbing on for such a long time. for those of you who actually took the time to read my over complicated confusions of words, here is a little thank you surprise… And for those of you who didn’t read it, I guess you’ll have already guzzled up the visual excitement of the following images…

oh how much i love these guys.

no prizes to those who can guess who i'll be writing about next...
